$10 million in new funding to support the arts

May 10, 2011

10 May 2011 — $10 million in new funding to support the arts

The Gillard Government has delivered on its election commitment to provide $10 million over five years in new support for young and emerging artists.

This new program provides funding for the creation of new Australian work across all art forms and will assist artists to build more sustainable careers.

Arts Minister Simon Crean said this new grants program will have a strong focus on increasing access to and participation in the arts for those living outside major metropolitan areas.

“The Gillard Government promised greater assistance to new and emerging artists last year and we are delivering with $10 million in new money for the Australia Council,” Mr Crean said.

“The $10 million will fund up to 150 additional artistic works, presentations and fellowships over five years,’’ Mr Crean said.

Finding room for this funding in a Budget that makes substantial savings to return to surplus in 2012/13 shows the strength of the Government’s commitment to support young and emerging artists.

“This significant investment demonstrates the Government’s leadership in encouraging all Australians to have the same opportunities to engage, practise and pursue a career in the arts,” Mr Crean said.

“Access to cultural activity for everyone, whatever their personal circumstances, background or location, is integral to building a society which fosters creativity.

“Building participation in the arts enriches regional communities and enhances the creative output of our nation.  A creative nation is a productive nation,” Minister Crean said.

The program will deliver grants of:

-       up to $80,000 per annum for new artistic works, including visual arts, performing arts, literature, new media and music;

-      up to $50,000 per annum for additional presentations to Australian audiences, including to communities outside the major metropolitan areas; and

-       $60,000 or more for fellowships for Australia’s young and emerging artists and mid-career artists.

Artists developing new content for distribution through the National Broadband Network or showcasing distinctive Australian work overseas may also be supported through this initiative.

The program is also aligned to the Government’s National Arts and Disability Strategy and supports social inclusion by increasing opportunities for Australian artists and audiences that would otherwise not have access to, or significantly reduced access to, funding for arts and cultural activities.

Luckily, you don’t need to rewrite your curriculum.  By learning a few IWB basics, you’ll find that many of your current class activities can be adapted for use on an IWB.

4 chord songs: lesson idea

June 18, 2012

HERE is a YouTube clip of the Axis of Awesome singing dozens of songs with the same chord progression (I  V vi IV). NB: One profanity. HERE is a similar clip with slightly different songs – some of them use the same chord progression but at twice the speed. After watching both, write up the chord progression in C (for keyboard = all white notes): C   G   a minor   F … and in G (for guitars): G   D   e minor   C. Ask students to learn one or other progression, so they can play the majority of pop songs!

8/11/12 Band Director free PD

November 5, 2012

Professional development for band directors: 8 November 2012

New ways of thinking

How to get your students thinking/saying

  • ‘I can’t wait to get to my rehearsal’
  • ‘Can I take home a practice copy?’
  • ‘This is MY Ensemble’

“Would You” the band director like to look forward to your next rehearsal?

Selecting Repertoire to make your band sound good!

  • Music that fulfills my music education responsibilities but remains entertaining
  • The effect of a good choice….it  can make an enormous difference

After recently adjudicating over 400 school bands around Australia and completing a very successful 3rd term residency at Xavier College Melbourne Monte Mumford will share some exciting ideas to help you the band director make a difference to your rehearsal, performance and on going ensemble culture.

We all know Monte as a University lecturer, Guest Conductor, Clinician, adjudicator and brilliant mentor and educator to teachers. However we haven’t until now, seen Monte practice what he preaches… In the hot seat of an every day instrumental teacher and band director at an Australian High School, for one term, with the usual limited rehearsal time and obstacles found in schools. The end of term performance was an amazing result, both within the students and the music they produced…Monte proved it is possible!….and the students loved it!

Join us…. be inspired and find out how!

WHEN: Thursday November 8th

TIME: 4:15pm – 6pm concluding with light refreshments

WHERE: Baker st Studios (for Future Music Australia) 2a Florence st Burwood, Vic

ACCET Choral Conductor Summer School 16-19 January, 2012

August 14, 2011

Fred Sjoberg of Sweden is international leader at the next Australian Choral Conductors Education and Training Summer School in Melbourne, along with an excellent Australian leadership team. Fred has conducted the World Youth Choir, the  World Chamber Choir and the European Youth Choir; and currently conducts the French National Youth Choir. He is a widely travelled conductor, educator and adjudicator. At ACCET Summer School next January, learn from him about score analysis and interpretation as a conductor, watch him teach conducting in master class and learn about enthusing young people, as well as discovering choral music of Sweden.

There are many experiences in this Summer School: Dalcroze – building music into the body through movement; diction – vowels, consonants, diphthongs and word accent in singing; specialist repertoire for primary and junior choirs, for secondary and youth choirs and for community and church choirs. In addition, a generous package of music is given to participants.

It will be four choral learning-filled days, and a great way to start the year’s music making. www.choralconductors.org.au

Acid Xpress training – 9 June 2011 (Vic)

May 15, 2011

Getting started with Film scoring on your PC
Thursday 9 June

Delve into the exciting world of film scoring using Acid Xpress and explore composing, arranging, recording and editing music, whilst synching sound to visuals.  The session will start by investigating the film scoring process by examining the roles of the music team: composer, editor, orchestrator and copyist.  Using short films, we’ll create our own movie soundtracks by adding sound effects, creating mood music and character themes.  We’ll also learn about hit points/time markers, cues and cue sheets, time code, scrubbing and synching and discuss a step-by-step approach to teaching film composition with your students.  Attendees will leave with a set of resources including lesson plan ideas.
This is a hands-on “bring your own laptop” session using Acid Xpress (free download ahead of session).  Participants without laptops are also welcome to attend.  Suitable for PC users only.

RAMEAU Dances from Dardanus, Les Boréades, Castor et Pollux and others

*Richard Tognetti Artistic Director and Lead Violin*

*Sydney Dance Company
*Australian Chamber Orchestra

Wed 31 Oct 12pm-2pm 2012

A mutual passion for Rameau’s perfumed and powerful French Baroque dance
music sparks this new production by Rafael Bonachela and Richard Tognetti.
Rameau’s flair for rhythm and melody, and feeling for choreography, leads
many to name him the greatest-ever ballet composer, certainly the most
influential. Bonachela’s dynamic choreography, innate musicality and
theatricality serve to illuminate this brilliant music, performed live by
the ACO.

This performance will feature and introduction and behind-the-scenes
discussion by Richard Tognetti and Rafael Bonachela, and a question and
answer session at the end of the performance.

Tickets $30. Teachers may book online www.aco.com.au/Default.aspx?url=/matinee

Program

DVOŘÁK Cello Concerto
BRAHMS Symphony No.4

Artists

Richard Tognetti Director and Violin
Steven Isserlis Cello

The Fourth is Brahms’ final and greatest symphony. Here, Brahms takes flight, as he melds the soaring sounds of Romanticism to classical structure in a constantly evolving drama.

Brahms premiered the symphony with a small orchestra of 48 musicians, which he declined to augment. ACO follow his lead and perform with wind instruments from Brahms’ time.
Steven Isserlis is the epitome of the intelligent and passionate cellist. Isserlis first played this concerto as a child. “I used to think it was so joyous,” he says. “As I’ve got older, the more tragic it seems.”

AMEB NSW Committee members

October 9, 2011

Seeking a new generation of Innovators to represent the interests of the Music Education Community in NSW …

AMEB calls for Nominations for 4 Private Teacher Representatives to

sit on the AMEB (NSW) Committee from 2012

*Nominations CLOSE SOON : Friday 21st OCTOBER 2011

Note: Self Nominations are acceptable.

Do you want to have a hand in shaping Australia’s music education future into the 21st Century? Well this could be your opportunity … it’s a little known fact that there is a significant level of professional music and speech teacher representation on the AMEB (NSW) Committee with no fewer than three Private Music Teacher Representatives and one Private Speech Teacher Representative representing the interests of our profession. Every two years elections are held for these honorary positions and it’s once again time to take a vote.

The election is particularly exciting this year with the AMEB recently foreshadowing what many see as a greater willingness to establish a more collaborative relationship with the Music and Speech Teaching communities in NSW. In the latest AMEB Newsletter, the Board stressed that the role of private teacher representatives on the NSW Committee is key to providing wider opportunities for the music, speech and drama communities to participate in the development of policies and practices for the AMEB (NSW). A welcome development indeed !

To be eligible to nominate or to be nominated for election, and to vote, a private teacher must have enrolled a candidate other than themselves in AMEB (NSW) examinations, in either of the two years immediately preceding the year of the election. These honorarium positions are for a period of two years and require attendance at four compulsory meetings in the course of each year. Elected nominees are appointed to the Board at the discretion of the Minister for Education.

So if you consider yourself to be a leader in your chosen profession your colleagues need you !

Nominations forms can be obtained from the AMEB State Manager – email: office@ameb.nsw.edu.au

Ballot papers will be distributed (along with a biography of each of the candidates) to eligible voters in November with 2012 AMEB Teachers Handbook.

Remember NOMINATIONS CLOSE : 21st OCTOBER 2011

AMRAP continues … for now!

January 10, 2013
On 21 December 2012 The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, announced that the government will provide an additional $250,000 to ensure the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (Amrap) continues for a further six months.

“The additional funding will ensure that Australian musicians and community broadcasters can continue to access Amrap’s services, pending consideration of the project’s long term funding in the 2013-14 Budget,” Senator Conroy said.

“Amrap has successfully increased the amount of Australian music receiving airplay by working closely with Australian musicians and community broadcasters,” said Senator Conroy.

animated cartoon of MCUI 2012

October 7, 2012
You can view the animation at anz.whymusicmatters.org

The 'Music Matters' campaign has produced an animation inspired by this
year's MCUI song, "Different People (Stand Together)".
The animation follows the song's evolution, from writing and recording, to
the performance by 600,000 school children on 1 November 2012.
The animation was designed by Motionlab, a Sydney-based animation studio led
by Luke Heise and Aaron Bartlett.
"Being part of this project has been a great experience for the team here at
Motionlab. Being lovers of music ourselves, we're proud to get behind a
project that supports the future of young Australian musicians," says Luke.
Originating in the UK in 2010, the Music Matters campaign is a collective of
people across the music community, including artists, songwriters, labels,
managers, publishers and music stores, formed to remind listeners of the
value and significance of music, explains MCA's new Board member, Catherine
Gerrard, who is a member of the Music Matters Steering Committee and Chair
of the Australasian Music Publishers' Association.
"The Music Matters campaign is a fresh and innovative project designed to
reawaken our connection to the value of music. The idea for Music Matters
and Music: Count Us In to collaborate was warmly embraced from the outset.
It makes sense: two real-life examples of the importance of music," she
says.

Archie & Ruby’s indigenous DVD

January 14, 2013

shop.abc.net.au/products/butcher-paper-texta-black-pbk

Butcher Paper, Texta, Black Board and Chalk is the culmination of 15 years work of Aboriginal singer songwriter Ruby Hunter with support from her life partner Archie Roach. This stunning children’s song book is full of beautiful illustrations and an accompanying music CD and informative DVD.

Many of the songs were written through song writing and music workshops held by Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach with children from across Cape York. The songs reflect the beliefs, pride, aspirations and issues of many clan groups and Aboriginal communities, from the coastal savannahs of Kowanyama to the towering rainforests of Lockhart River, as seen through the eyes of Aboriginal children and songwriters.”

Archie Roach – quote to inspire composition

February 17, 2013

This quote is found under the CD of Archie Roach’s latest album: “Into the Bloodstream“. Read the quote to your students and ask them to write a composition or song in response.

“My recent bouts of illness I’m sure are a result of the Pain of being removed from my family at a young age and more recently the loss of someone I loved so dearly. But Pain can also bring about change in one’s life for the better. We can choose to ignore the Pain until it becomes unbearable or we can do something. You see some events in my life I will never truly get over and the Pain will always be there but I can do something about it. I can write songs, songs about making it to the Top of the Hill no matter how far, songs about not being alone so don’t cry, songs about all of us having a song to sing and songs we can dance to.”

Art for Life’s Sake – Yo Yo Ma

May 19, 2013

http://blog.artsusa.org/2013/04/09/yo-yo-ma-spins-an-emotional-tale-of-art-for-lifes-sake/

Speaking of arts education, Ma explained that experts say there are four qualities needed in students and inside the current workforce: collaborative, flexible, imaginative, and innovative.

Ma said, “We know that our present educational system encourages knowledge acquisition and critical thinking, but what about these other qualities? How do we develop them?” He thinks the answers are in the arts through its integration into the entire school curricula.

CONCLUSION: “So, just in case the premise that music alters our visual perception proves true in future studies and in more real world situations the next time you hit PLAY, choose wisely. ArtPlay Big Jam in Melb 11/11/12

October 31, 2012

CALLING ALL GUITARISTS, RECORDER PLAYERS, UKULELE-ISTS…

(and flutes, and violins, and clarinets, and saxophones, and bass guitars, and cellos, and marimbas, and percussion… and any other instrument you like)

Do you play an instrument? Would you like to join a band? Come to ArtPlay in the heart of Melbourne on Sunday 11 November to help us form the biggest band ArtPlay has ever seen or heard!

The event is ‘Jump on the Bandwagon’ and the aim is to see how many musicians – all ages, all playing together – it takes to fill ArtPlay with music. In the course of an hour we will create a brand new piece of music, with help from some of Melbourne’s most inspiring and innovative musicians from the jazz, classical and rock music worlds.

‘Jump on the Bandwagon’ is a Big Jam for the whole family, and everyone is invited – mums, dads, brothers and sisters, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles – and anyone else! You can be any age and of any level of musical experience. More experienced players will learn new music, invent riffs and rhythms, improvise a solo, and work alongside musicians from the MSO, the Australian Art Orchestra, and Melbourne’s diverse freelance scene. First-timers will have the unforgettable experience of being part of a large and tight ensemble – like an orchestra but with a few more electric guitars and a lot more percussion.

BYO instrument or play one of ours on the day.

arts help stroke recovery

March 22, 2012

Study: Art Appreciation Boosts Stroke Recovery
HuffPost Healthy Living, 3/16/12
“An appreciation for the arts could be a boon to stroke survivors, a new study suggests. Research presented at the 12th Annual Spring Meeting on Cardiovascular Nursing shows appreciating art increases quality of life for stroke survivors, and stroke patients who find joy in music, theater, and painting recover better than those who don’t…Researchers conducted their study on 192 stroke survivors with an average age of 70. The study participants were asked whether they were art lovers or not. Then, the researchers compared the quality of life between those who said they liked art and those who said they didn’t like it. The researchers found that the ones who reported liking art were also in better health than those who reported the opposite—they had an easier time walking, were more energetic and less depressed, and felt happier and less anxious.”

iPads, iPhones and other tablets in the Music classroom

The iPad is a virtual Banjo, Guitar, Sitar and an Oud. Along with the iPhone and similar tablets it can be a multi track recorder, sound editor, DJ’s rig and sampling pad.  The iPad is a musical collaboration tool and a device to assist and inspire song writing and composition. It is a window into the concert hall. The iPad is a personal musical encyclopaedia and aural trainer and a tool to display and create musical scores, in standard and graphic notation. It can be a great tool to record student performances and create student videos. This workshop led by Andrew Swainston will discuss and outline some of the best ways we can use the iPad and iPhone in the classroom. Michael Travers a composer, teacher and curriculum innovator will also demonstrate strategies for incorporating this technology into creative classroom activities.

Australian Documentary on school choir

July 30, 2011

(from Ensemble: 23 June 2011)

Power of song personified in new Australian documentary

The Hon Peter Garrett MP, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth, 5 May, 2011

The Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett, today launched the documentary film Seriously Singing – a Cinderella Story at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Seriously Singing documents the achievements of the choir of Lake Boga Primary School and its conductor, Jessie Carmichael (nee Arnold), in the Jubilee year of Federation, 1951.

Representing Victoria in the Commonwealth Jubilee School Choirs’ festival, Lake Boga Primary was crowned Victoria’s best small primary school choir, singing before Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies in the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne.

“The unique historical insights this documentary contains are an inspirational story for all Australian schools,” said Mr Garrett.

“It shows the powerful transformation that making music and singing can have on students’ lives.”

Australians’ Attitudes to Music – research

August 15, 2011

Read the research brief here

This report presents results from a study of Australian households which was commissioned by the Australian Music Association. The results are based on 1,000 interviews with households randomly selected across all of Australia.

Here are some of the findings:

  • 36% of Australian households contain at least one person who now plays a musical instrument. This equates to a rough estimate of 4 million people of all ages (5+ yrs) who play.
  • Music players have a young profile. It was found that 35% are aged 5-17 yrs and a further 28% are aged 18-34 yrs. That is, almost two-thirds of music players fall within the 5-34 yrs age bracket – compared to just under half of the total population (5+ yrs).

awareness vs busy-ness

October 7, 2012

Here is a story I cut and paste from FaceBook — only takes a minute to read:

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it

was rush hour, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping, and continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

Barbershop – Blenders Youth Chorus – Queensland

August 17, 2011

A note from Jonathan Albertini:

The Blenders youth chorus (BYC) is located on the Gold Coast in Ashmore.  It is a passion of mine to increase awareness on the Gold Coast and local schools and get more young men singing this wonderful art form of barbershop.  My vision is to see barbershop being taught in the school curriculum.  New Zealand has a wonderful Barbershop program in their curriculum for all schools (even more so in the United States).  I think the youth need to start getting more involved in a Capella singing and barbershop.  There is the potential to build many youth choruses around Australia and there are regular barbershop competitions to test their skills on the big stage and get great performing experience.  It is a very social hobby and they will make many friends. There are even opportunities to travel internationally and compete in USA competitions.

At present I have been organising (free of charge) for a barbershop youth quartet to perform at school assemblies to students and show them that “singing is cool” for boys.  The schools absolutely loved our performances and now want us to return to run workshops for the boys!  I am very excited about this and I would love to build on this even more.  We are a not-for-profit organisation.  I simply want to see barbershop grow in Australia and reach out to young men who like to sing.

Beat-boxing

March 18, 2011

A lesson idea for Friday afternoon with 14 year olds … Beatbox!

Without using vocal chords, students practise making the following sounds:

ch, ss, sh, k & p.

Each student combines these sounds to make drumkit sound effects.

Watch some beat-boxing clips on YouTube.com

Record (audio or video) each student’s beat-boxing efforts – in pairs or individually. Choose some of the students to beat-box into a microphone (attached to an amplifier).

According to the Children’s Music Workshop, the effect of music education on language development can be seen in the brain. “Recent studies have clearly indicated that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain’s circuits in specific ways. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds,” the group claims.

Big Question blog

April 7, 2013

After watching the Mitra TED talk together (http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_build_a_school_in_the_cloud.html), and discussing the future of learning for today’s teenagers, 12-13 year olds in a Music class were asked to get into groups, devise their own “Big Question” to do with music, and come up with a researched presentation. Grouping was flexible, and open to change. Each group had to appoint a ‘granny’ for encouragement. Presentation format was up to each group.

Questions included:

“Who first invented music?”

“How do people respond to different genres of music?”

“How do disabled people experience music?”

“How has music changed over the last 100 years?”

“How is music education different across the globe?”

After half an hour, any student who was without a group (and therefore without a big question) was teacher-guided to collect photos of unusual instruments to present to the class.

Only a few students took the ‘unusual instrument’ approach. Two students found a superficial answer to their question in 5 minutes and settled on it. The rest worked collaboratively and enthusiastically – even those students who avoid practical music making, which was pleasing!

4 lessons were given for the task – 3 of which were in a computer lab. The level of working noise was greater than normal, but very productive. Most students were on task for the vast majority of the time. Excitement was evident in most students. Collaborative work was predominant, with all students voicing their opinions at various times. Weaker students often found themselves working with stronger peers. Groups changed a little throughout the 4 sessions, finding a better balance. Questions of the teacher were few and far between, having encouraged students to seek answers from their group.

Presentations were predominantly in PowerPoint, with students taking turns to read from the screen. This Project-Based Learning (PBL) or SOLE (Student-Oriented Learning Environment) task formed one of six assessment tasks for the year, under the title of “Self Nominated Project”.

The teacher found the sessions lively and entertaining, having the rare chance to sit back and observe active learning as an interested spectator. From a teaching point of view, the SOLE experiment was fun, energising, painless, and surprisingly easy – students did as much thinking as the teacher, which is my new goal for classroom teaching!

Bolero Flash Mob

October 6, 2011

This is great fun … On May 2, 2011, the Copenhagen Philharmonic amazed commuters at the Copenhagen Central Train Station, as they created a kind of orchestral “flash mob” – performing Ravel’s famed Bolero, with the musicians gradually assembling in place as the work progresses. The video – which shows not only the assembling orchestra, but also the delighted faces of the commuters – has generated overwhelming interest, and indeed has exceeded the orchestra’s expectations.
